🗣️ Ali Abdaal's Most viewed YT video breakdown
5 Do's and Don'ts, 1 Rewrite, etc.
Sup creator 👋🏾
In this email, I break a part of Al Abdaal's most popular YT video's script.
Not the whole script, only valuable parts.
Title: "9 passive income ideas-how I make $27k/per week"
Why the title is good:
People love numbers
He reveals his income
Passive income is a popular term
"In this video, we're gonna talk about nine different ways that you can make passive income. And for each of those, I'm gonna talk about how hard it is to get started, how hard it is to make $100 a month from it, and how hard it is to maintain once you've created the thing in the first place"
It takes ~17 seconds to read all this.
Enough for a nice intro.
"These 9 sources generate me around $27k per week around these days."
I would've moved this up in the intro,
so that the whole title is covered.
"And obviously this has taken me 8 years to build up.
So don't expect to be hitting those sorts of numbers when you first get started."
Gentle reminder about PaSsIvE iNcOmE.
"But this is the video that I wish I would've had when I started my financial independence journey many, many years ago."
I mean, everyone says this.
Kinda cliche, huh.
"So let's say you were to write a book. If you write a book, you publish a book. That book is now in bookshelves.
You've done the work kind of once, to write and publish the book, but now, anytime the book sells, you make money from royalties, that is passive income.
You could literally be making money while you sleep, because you've created this thing, which is out in the world, which is generating income for you."
I show this because he gives the book example.
An advice w/o an example is shit.
"If you see any ads before this video,
talking about how you can get rich quick,
by whatever scheme, or if you see people in the comments pretending to be me, saying,
"Oh my God, here's how you can get rich quick with crypto, WhatsApp this number,"
that is all a scam, it's not gonna work.
There is no way to get rich quick, it's not a thing."
This makes the viewers attentive to the video. Because there's no other way.
There is no get-rich-quick scheme. The only person who says they know one is getting rich off you
"Just before we dive in, I wanna tell you that I've just launched my brand new Skillshare class about productivity for creators, how to start a successful side hustle. That's linked to the video description."
An example of integrated promotions.
I read about it first in '$100M Leads'
" 1:Investing in stocks and shares
We're starting with this because investing in stocks is the easiest way to make any kind of passive income."
Easiest.
This settles in viewer's mind
that anybody can do it.
"If you have any sorts of savings, and they're sitting in a savings account, earning 0.01% interest, they're not really doing very much for you. Whereas, if you had those savings and put them in stocks, you could potentially be earning passive income from the money that's otherwise just sitting there."
This is a decent example of FOMO.
He could've used it better if he wanted to.
Just agitation on the benefits viewers are missing.
"Now, I've got a whole video called The Ultimate Guide to Investing in Stocks and Shares for Beginners, which is gonna be linked somewhere. So that is a solid, half-hour-long introduction to stocks and exactly how they work."
Again, an integrated promotion.
Except it's not a product, just another video.
So he kind of flywheel's to more content.
Like most people do in the video's end.
"Basically, whatever country you're in, just Google the phrase best stock broker platform and your country name, and you'll find something that works for you. Then it's very easy to invest in an index fund.”
"Within our famous Side Hustle Assessment Matrix, we're gonna give the difficulty of starting a one-star rating, one out of five. It's very, very easy to get started with stocks."
"Very, Very EASY"
but ofc don't use "very" anywhere.
It's a shit word and jargon.
"how hard it is to maintain this income once you've set it up in the first place. We're gonna give this a 1/5 because once you've got the money in, you just set it and forget it."
"Just set it and forget it"
Makes the viewers feel more sovereign.
And btw, this is indirect enhancement of SLOTH- one of the 7 deadly sins.
"There are other sources of passive income that require higher degrees of maintenance over time, but stocks and shares are a very easy way to make passive income."
Again, "very easy".
Except this time he also tells why:
Maintenance
Effort
Time
"To use my personal example, these days, my stocks and shares portfolio, which I've been investing in since 2015, is now worth around about $350,000."
(People love stories and numbers)
In this Stocks way of Passive income,
The 'how hard to make $100/ week' is hard.
But 'how hard to get started and maintain' are easy.
This creates an imbalance,
but in the viewer's favour.
Ofc, you know it's not true.
Nothing is easy.
Things require long-term efforts.
But the video itself is a short term piece.
It's just meant to introduce the viewer.
"It took me 6 months, 52 videos to get my first 1000 subscribers."
Again, people love your numbers.
"If people message me like, 'Hey, I wanna start YouTube.' I was like, 'You have to be able to put in the effort and do this for a very long period of time, at least once a week.' "
He's giving a reality check. You can focus more on the easy part and less on hard.
But since you are not a lame guru(i hope),
You should be honest like Ali is being.
"But when it comes to assessing how hard is this to do, I'm gonna give this a four out of five stars. It's actually very hard to make compelling YouTube videos, and it's very to get started, but it's hard to do well."
Again, beng honest…
"It's totally worth it, it's a great skillset, it's really fun. You get to meet people across the internet. You get to learn how to talk to a camera and how to film and video edit. And it's really great, but it's very hard to actually make money from YouTube."
One disadvantage: Very hard
Advantages: great skillset, fun, networking
He further breaks down the skillset too.
That brings more weight to advantages even though it's hard.
But everything is hard.
Life gets easier when you realise nothing is easy.
"Idea number three for making passive income is to start a podcast. This is generally easier than starting a YouTube channel."
A lot of "easy parts" in this video are just common sense.
So I wouldn't say it's actual copy.
But I also can't find much tools in use here.
Ali simply lays info with no use of tools.
Until you genuinely want to make money,
You would find this a boring video.
Ofc, video editing can hook them,
But it takes more time and effort.
Instead, just have a better script.
I'm not gonna include the rest of podcast part.
Because it's just dry info. Though it does say how YT is better than podcast.
So you could use THAT.
If you want to show something as good,
Just roast all other alternatives.
Do's and Don'ts:
❌ Make it all dry info
❌ Use filler words
✅ FOMO
✅ Be honest
✅ Use your own numbers
✅ Don't boast your product, roast alternatives. Show how others are eww.
If I had to Rewrite:
I would make the script a bit more engaging.
Since this is just info and not promotion,
I would not use 7 deadly sins or FOMO.
Because the people will choose the way.
I would open a lot of problem solution loops.
The only time I used FOMO here would be so they see the full video and don't skim a lot.
My opinion for you:
Just don't be a non fiction book.
Don't be Dull, dry and boring.
Create intrigue, more personal stories etc.
